Art's Role in These Uncertain Chaotic Times
It seems that every hour brings some explosive new story that grabs our attention. Racism, Covid 19, our civil rights, our values, and even humanity itself. Everything from our physical and mental health to our great democratic experiment appears to be under attack. So, how can we possibly think of art at a time like this?”
I have asked myself this question as the Covid-19 pandemic rages on with many thousands dying and millions more losing their economic livelihoods. We find ourselves trying to ward off dread as we struggle with isolation, uncertainty and fear. Really, who cares a hoot about art's role in our lives at a time like this?
Well, don't be so fast in dismissing the importance of art which has played a deeply important cultural role throughout history. Various art forms have proven to be critical to staying emotionally healthy and connected. Art offers comfort and purposeful distraction and can help us feel less alone. Art provides glimpses of how we can cope with anxieties in the face of crises. Art nurtures our spirit, and allows each of us to experience curiosity, inspiration and joy—even at socially necessary and acceptable distances.
If this isn’t the appropriate time to nurture our spirit, when on earth would be? Two artists, Dread Scott and Jenny Polak recently shared a digital sketch they created that embeds the words “Redistribute Health”. They also offered a call-to-action list anyone can implement to survive Covid-19. Engaging Oneself in Art ranks 36th on their list—not the most important action for sure; but certainly indispensable none-the-less.
Painting has kept me mostly affable and sane, except for an occasional bad moment here and there, since this ghastly epidemic began. I’m sharing several of my most recent paintings, and I’m working on more that I’ll share as I complete them. Because of today’s upside-down world, I’ve reduced prices to make it easier for people to enjoy my art on a permanent basis. I'm also offering a recent Abstract painting "Heart of Gold" as a special offer where I will contribute one-half of the sale price to a coronavirus relief fund in the name of the purchaser of the painting.
