After years of painting in a traditional manner, I have moved to a more contemporary multi-phase process. The first phase of my painting process involves generating digital images - from original sketches to combined and altered photographs, or both - to produce an original underpainting. With the underpainting complete, phase two involves transferring this underpainting to canvas and stretching the canvas onto an underframe. At that point, I begin the third phase of my painting process, which is to complete the painting by hand using traditional tools (brushes, cloths, palette knifes, scrapers, etc.) to produce layers of acrylic paint and gels, gouache, archival inks, water-based oils, and occasionally other collage-like materials. The result is a unique, colorful mixed-media original that has great character, vibrancy and depth.
